Value Dining, originally called “Good Eats”, not intentionally lifted from the Food Channel program with the same name, this column was meant to highlight the restaurants that serve good food at reasonable rates, with no pretention, and consistent quality. So…as we’ve strayed a little from our mission statement with some fancier dining establishments, we will rename this column “Value Dining” so we never forget our roots, and won’t get reprimanded by the Food Channel!

North Third Restaurant, located at 801 North Third Street in Philadelphia, boasts a sensational menu, funky décor, and unique crowd. Though the food and atmosphere are outstanding, the most intriguing feature of this restaurant is the “Fancypants Cinema”, late-night every Tuesday. Attending guests are invited to bring in their short films (15 minutes or less) to be screened in the Lounge portion of the restaurant. The film list is based on whatever is brought in that night; the list is never preplanned or prescreened. Obviously, this makes for an interesting mix of film styles and themes: you never know what you’re going to get on any particular night. North Third Lounge has played host to The Sundance Channel, The Philadelphia Film Festival, and The Philadelphia Live ARTS, among others. Of course, if film isn’t your thing, the menu is affordable and diverse, ranging from shrimp and ginger dumplings and edamame to traditional hot wings and burgers.
